STAR TREK SCREW-UPS
-------------------
Compiled by Simon Plumbe and Mark Haggett
-------------------------------------------
Okay, I know the title's a bit iffy, but if you can think of anything better,
let us know! There's a free issue up for grabs for the best idea! Send your
suggestions to the usual address.
This is another of our regular features, looking at many of the mistakes
that slipped past the cutting room in TREK, THE NEXT GENERATION and in the
films (We don't want to hear anything about THE MOTION PICTURE okay!!). Why
look at the mistakes? Well, TREK is a great show, but it was far from perfect
and if we can accept the flaws you'll probably enjoy the good parts more!
It's probably best to start with what the fans now refer to as "Classic Trek"
otherwise know as the original series.
Star Trek
---------
First is from the season three episode, "Spock's Brain" (shut up, it's not
that bad!). After Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and what's left of Spock have been
captured, we see them sitting, unconcious, on chairs. Kirk and McCoy have
one hand down by their sides and the other in their laps. Scotty has both
his hands clasped in his lap. However, the next shot we see has Scotty
with both of his hands down by his side - while he is still supposed to be
out cold!
Next is from season one, specifically "The Enemy Within". We see Kirk
materialise in the Transporter Room. He stumbles and leaves with Scotty. Then
we see the alternative Kirk beam up wearing an identical uniform to the
passive Kirk apart from the fact that his (the "evil" Kirk's) uniform has no
insignia on the chest. However, by the next scene (the evil Kirk entering
Sick Bay), one has miraculously appeared!
The Next Generation
-------------------
First up is from episode 2 of season one, The Naked Now. When Data has found
the information Riker has asked for about someone showering in their clothes,
we see Picard, Data and Riker reading the information off the screen.
However, the illustration of the Enterprise that accompanies the record is of
the Enterprise AFTER it's re-fit, but the incident occurred BEFORE!! Oh well,
I always said that Starfleet's records were a bit cocked up!
It can be really difficult for people to cope with space travel, especially
at the high speeds reached when travelling faster than the speed of light.
What do I mean? Well, space travel can do funny things to the brain and
people can easily lose all sense of speed. For example, in The Naked Now (oh
no, not again!!), Picard states at the beginning that they are travelling at
Warp 7, but if you look behind him out of the window the stars aren't
whizzing past as they're supposed to when a ship travels at Warp speed. Next
time why not let the FX guys know when to change the style of star field?
One of the biggest problems with the first season was that of continuity with
the dialogue. What do I mean? Well, in "Datalore", when Wesley was teaching
Lore about the control of the Enterprise, it was mentioned that all headings
were given by two numbers between 0 and 360 separated by the word "mark".
Well, in "Symbiosis" Geordi set the heading for "970 Mark 318 at Warp 3" -
slightly off course, methinks!
The mistake with the headings has also popped up in another Season one
episode - "Lonely Among Us" when Picard orders the ship to fly in a heading
of "925 Mark 37".
The Movies
----------
First is a biggie from THE WRATH OF KHAN. When Chekov beams down to Ceti
Alpha 6, he and his captain encounter Khan. Khan and Chekov stare at each
other in surprise when they recognise each other, even though they have never
met before! As you will know, Space Seed was a Season ONE episode and Chekov
wasn't seen until Season TWO! Paramount actually knew about this, but thought
that the fans wouldn't notice! For an unusual explanation for this, see the
Richard Arnold article in this issue.
Next is from THE FINAL FRONTIER. The scene in question is where Kirk, Spock
and McCoy are ascending the turbolift shaft. As they fly up using Spock's
jet-boots, they fly past Deck 52, then past Deck 64, and then past Deck 52
again!!! And I thought it was Kirk who was bad at driving!
However, I won't mention the fact that they fly right up to deck 72, about
50 decks more than the Enterprise is supposed to have! 72 decks would make
the Enterprise over 20 decks larger than the GALAXY-CLASS Enterprise!!!
